Golden Bay is an hour and a half from Nelson over a hill road that closes in bad weather, and that single fact shapes a heat pump job here more than the climate does. The weather itself is mild and wet rather than cold, the housing is older and often owner-built, and wood has traditionally done the heating. A heat pump suits the place well. It just has to be planned properly, because nobody is popping back for a forgotten bracket.

The hill decides how the job runs

That puts more weight than usual on the quoting stage. Mild, wet, and damper than it is cold

Golden Bay does not get the frosts the Waimea plains do. The sea keeps it mild and the rainfall keeps it damp, and damp is the problem worth solving. Houses here get condensation on the windows, mould in the corners of unheated rooms and that particular smell in a hallway that never quite warms up.

A heat pump handles that well, because warmer air holds moisture instead of dropping it on the coldest surface in the room. Run steadily at a modest setting it dries a house out over a season in a way that intermittent heating never does.

What it will not fix is a wet subfloor, a blocked gutter or a bathroom with no extractor. Ground moisture cover and a bit of ventilation alongside it do more together than either does alone.

Wood heating, and what changes

Plenty of Golden Bay houses have always burned wood, often with the wood close to free. A heat pump will not beat that on fuel cost if you are cutting your own, and it is worth being straight about it.

What it does beat it on is everything else: heat in the bedrooms rather than one hot room, warmth when you get home rather than an hour later, cooling in February, and no ash, no hauling and no chimney. Most people who add one keep the burner for the depths of winter and use the heat pump for the long mild shoulder months where lighting a fire is more trouble than it is worth.

For an off-grid or solar-heavy house the sums are different again, since a heat pump is the most efficient way there is to turn electricity into heat. Worth raising at the quote if that is your situation.

Older and owner-built housing

The housing stock here is varied in a way the city's is not: villas, baches that became permanent homes, and a good number of owner-built places that do not follow any standard plan. Insulation ranges from good to none, sometimes in the same house.
